Kitty from Exotic Paddles Interview

Kitty is the craftswoman behind Exotic Paddles, a California based manufacturer of paddles in various types of wood, especially exotic woods.

Kitty thank you for participating in this Q&A.

To begin with tell us a little of your personal history.

I was born in West Covina and have been all my life with the exception of a stint of a year in Washington and five and another of  five and a half years in Nevada. Many people ask me if I was spanked as a child.wolf paddle 2

I actually had a very abusive childhood and I don’t connect spanking with it. To me, the hallmarks of spanking are trust and caring. Chemistry is a big thing to me.

I’ve always been an artistic sort. I’ve painted in different mediums and also enjoy an art form called scratchboard. I’ve done sculpture and in my adult years got involved in refinishing furniture. My ability to work with woods comes from the fact that I had an antique furniture restoration business. I still find antique pieces once in a while that interest me enough to take them home and restore them.

I have a strong affinity for animals. I’m allergic to everything with fur and feathers but that doesn’t stop me. Currently I have a dog, three cats, six chickens and a horse. I have had a multitude of different animals and they have all enriched my life.

I met my husband through a spanking chat site. I met him for lunch one blustery rainy day and went over his lap in his truck, it was a wonderful experience. The next time we met, we spent a weekend together up in Big Bear; it was a whole bunch of fun and makes for a great story. We’ve been married for three years and have been together much longer. We live in beautiful Southern California with our animal family.

When did you first discover you had an interest in corporal punishment?

I didn’t realize this until I was well into my adult years. I have always had somewhat of a fascination with it, but that had always been tucked deep down and for the most part ignored. I didn’t really delve into it until I chanced upon a spanking site and was intrigued. From there my interest grew.

What led you to making wooden paddles?

heartsmI have always had an affinity for wood. In school, while the other girls were taking home economics, I was taking wood shop with the boys. When I reached adulthood, I expanded my interest and learned how to refinish furniture, specifically antiques. I had a company that bought damaged antiques and restored them. So when it came to making paddles, wood was the natural choice for me. I knew how to work it and was familiar with all the tools used in working it.

What can you tell me about Exotic Paddles?

vanity black walnutExotic Paddles was born out of a comment I made to my husband (who was more of an acquaintance at that point). He took me to my first Shadow Lane party and I looked at the implements available. I told him that I could do a much better job than what I saw and he told me, if you can, then you should do it. So the very next party saw my first offerings from Exotic Paddles. I started off with exotic woods in the very beginning. This is because common woods just don’t interest me. If I’m going to work on them, I want them to be interesting. If I’m going to put hours worth of work into making them, I want them to be beautiful when they’re finished. I pretty much sold out at my first showing, but I really didn’t have all that many to sell at that point, maybe twenty or so.

Exotic woods are harder to work with  and more expensive, what makes the exotic wood more interesting for you?

angel_makersmCommon woods just don’t interest me. Yes, they are cheaper but are they pretty? I suppose so, but not as pretty as many of the more exotic woods. It’s easy to make a paddle look mean; the hard part is to make a paddle that is beautiful. I wanted people to enjoy not only the feel but also the look of it. My paddles can be intimidating but they are also pretty. Many people automatically lift the paddles and caress their cheek with them, this is not only because of their smoothness but also their natural beauty. I don’t stain any of my woods, I want the woods to speak for themselves.

I’ll have to agree that they are beautiful. I have many of your paddles and they are something you want people to see, they pick them up and comment on the beauty, even before they worry if it will be painful or not. Your paddles are something anyone can be proud to display.

What would you like people to know about you / your implements?

melodyThe thing I have seen over and over again in the use of wooden implements is skin damage caused by the edges of the implement. My implements are not made to damage. The idea of my implements is that they cause sensation with as little damage as possible. All of my paddles have a slight pillow shape to them and all of their edges are completely rounded off. This means that there are no hard edges to meet and damage skin. I also sand my paddles down to a 4,000 grit as opposed to most that sand down to about 220 grit and very few that sand down to 600 grit. It literally takes hours to make a paddle in the way that I make them. But I believe that I owe it to the person that will be feeling it, to make it as well as I can. I enjoy hearing how much people like my creations. It means a lot to me.

They are very smooth, some say, “smooth as silk”. They are also well made, so they are durable and can be used often and with gusto. Having felt many of them I agree that there are no paddles out there like them. They really have no hard edges at all.  With use you don’t see the edge outlines like you do with most other paddles.

What was your favorite exotic wood to work with?

Believe it or not, I really don’t have a favorite. If I don’t like a wood, I don’t work with it. I have to enjoy working with the wood because I take so long on each paddle. Every piece of wood has its own character. Every piece of wood lends itself to certain shapes. I had a piece of gorgeous olive wood that I refused to cut until the purchaser allowed me to cut it my way. We went back and forth for about six months; I offered him his money back and everything. I absolutely refused to cut it until I could cut it the way I wanted to. Finally, he relented and let me have my way. When he got the piece he was very happy with it. He treasures it, and has not argued with me since.

What is the most difficult wood you have ever used?

Olive and Vera are very close. They are very dense woods that like to have saw blades for snacks. They are still very beautiful woods and well worth the time it takes to work them.

What is your favorite paddle to make?

stringmanI don’t really have a favorite paddle to make. I like them all. If I don’t like a shape, it doesn’t stay in my product line. I made a one off paddle for a good friend. It was in the shape of a clover. That has to be my least favorite paddle and I refused to make another, even though many asked me to. Some of the paddle shapes are harder to make than the others but that doesn’t make them a least favorite, they just take longer. I can say, if I come up with a new shape or a new wood, I always try the first one myself. I want to know exactly what it feels like. If I don’t like the product, it never sees the light of day. I have destroyed and tossed multiple paddles that I didn’t like.

What was the most unusual special order you ever got?

That’s easy. A custom made paddle ordered by my husband’s boss. It had his name at the top, her name at the bottom and a hand painted yellow rose between them.

You ship paddles all over the world, where is the furthest you have ever shipped a paddle to?

My most notable shipping locations were Japan, Scotland, New Zealand, Holland, even the Middle East.

Do you ever have trouble filling orders?

longhandlecapchoicesmYes, I do, sometimes. I have had people’s orders end up in my spam for some reason, and I don’t know about them until someone writes me. Often, the paddle that someone wants has already been sold, but I’ve always had a good substitute and have had absolutely no complaints about the paddles people have received. When people order, if they don’t hear from me within a week, they should contact me and make sure I am aware of the order. I like to talk to people before I send the item. Sometimes they order something they believe is really pretty but is much too heavy for what they are looking for. I’d rather them get something that feels right that they can use.

What type of care should you give a paddle?

All of my paddles are oiled before they are sold. The care they need is to be oiled once in a while. Not with furniture spray but with real oil for woods. I use a Danish oil. Paddles should never be left in a hot car because two things can happen. The heat can extract the oil from the wood, and the wood can warp from the heat.

What about for cleaning the wooden implements what do you recommend?

You take care of wood paddles just as you would any fine piece of wood. Oil them so they don’t dry out. You can wipe them down lightly with an alcohol rub if you need to disinfect them, but you will need to oil them immediately after. There is no lacquer or any plasticizing chemical on my paddles unless it is specifically asked for. This is because those products change the feel. Bare wood is better. Just keep it oiled.

Do you have a typical customer?

frat_boysmAmazingly, the answer is no. My customers come from every walk of life. I have very private customers that don’t interact with anyone but their spouse and would be mortified if anyone knew of their kink. I have customers that work within the spanking industry as video producers or professional Doms and Dommes, to everything in between. I have had individuals that wanted to purchase from me that I would not sell to. These are people that told me they specifically wanted a paddle that was made to be mean, made to do damage and one even said he wanted it to draw blood. These individuals are not my customers. Sometimes bottoms get raw from play and sometimes blood does come, but it’s not done with intent and it doesn’t happen that often.

Have you noticed any changes in your customer base since you started selling implements?

captainI have indeed noticed a difference. In the beginning, my customers were people that attended Shadow Lane, They were the first to be exposed to my paddles. As time went on, and I had a website built, my client base began to spread out. Now I ship basically all over the world and a large portion of my clients are professional Doms, Dommes and video producers as well as an ever rising number of private parties.

What should a beginner understand before using a wooden paddle? Before having one used on them?

tiger ashIf this is the very first wooden paddle the person is using, they should talk to their co-participant. Make sure that they have a safe word in place and that it will be acknowledged immediately. When the play starts, they should start over clothes, something like jeans. As the play progresses and the person using the paddle begins to get accustomed to it, then they may progress to less protection over the bottom. Take it slow, if the beginner is  open to it, have an experienced person smack his or her bottom with it so they know the power of the implement. Understand that different weight implements have different power to them. Start off with a lighter implement and don’t progress to the heavier one until you have gained experience with the lighter one. Always pay attention to where the paddle is landing and how the person being paddled is responding.

How should you use a paddle?

Lion Ash
Considerately and compassionately, a paddle can be a severe implement, even a paddle that is made with care. The person that is swinging the paddle needs to know the power of the implement they swing, they are being given complete trust by the person they are interacting with and it is their responsibility to know what they’re doing. If it is their first time using a paddle, they should start of lightly and build up as they get feedback from the person they are using the paddle on. They should make sure their partner has a safe word and respond to it immediately should it be used.

How shouldn’t you use a paddle?

Irresponsibly and carelessly, I have seen many instances where the person swinging the paddle wasn’t even paying attention to where the paddle was landing. The individual was too busy looking around at what they might miss; being completely inattentive to the person they were interacting with at the time. This is not only an insult, it is plain dangerous. A paddle is a firm implement and a misplaced swing could land it high, striking the tailbone. If you are spanking someone with anything at all, including your hand, you should always pay complete attention to the person you are interacting with. They gave you their trust and you owe them your care and attention.

How mainstream do you think spanking has become?

I think it’s become very main stream in a naughty sort of way. It’s not an every day thing. When it shows up in TV shows or movies, it is done in order to be ‘edgy’ and ‘titillating’. The general public is not ready to accept it as something to be talked about openly and enjoyed unreservedly. While it may be a secret desire for a multitude of people, a large portion of them are still not ready to take that first step.
